Judo is a Japanese martial art created in 1882 around a set of techniques that emphasized control, leverage, and mutual safety, making it possible to practice with full effort without serious risk. From the beginning, judo (meaning “the gentle way”) was envisioned as not just a sport or a method of self-defense, but also as a tool for character development and education, especially suitable for children and youth. It was designed to promote physical fitness, respect, discipline, and confidence—all through safe, structured, and cooperative practice. Training at the elementary level emphasizes games and playful exploration, so children enjoy themselves while naturally developing key physical skills—like balance, coordination, and the essential life skill of learning how to fall safely.
